The Jhitku Mitki Dokra’s

Chattisgarh’s very own Dokra craft grace the grounds of Delhi at their state emporium.

Also, known as Dokra/Dhokra craft, metal pieces similar to these were discovered at the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro sites. Which bought in a belief that this form of art dates back to the earliest of times, along with being known as one of the earliest known methods of metal casting!

In the present times, this art is widely prevalent in Chattisgarh. The Ghadwas of Bastar and Jharas of Raigarh are the tribes closely associated it. Besides being an art form this has also travelled as folklore “of a tribal couple known as Jhitku Mitki” along generations. The myth still lives on and is built on strong memory. Based on this our versions of Romeo and Juliet idols have been formed and there exists a whole range associated with this.

The term Dokra/Dhokra basically means “the casting of bell metal or brass using the Lost Wax technique”. As mentioned above the Ghadwa’s are associated with it and ironically as per the local language Ghadwa means “to space or create”.

Although this beautiful art form is a Chhattisgarh exclusive it is available in the capital city of the country, Delhi! Shabari, the state emporium is located in the Rajiv Gandhi Handicrafts Bhavan. The emporium would house authentic, unique pieces of this art form along with various others from the state. Although the widest authentic variety is available in state emporium itself, there are other emporiums/shops located nearby which stock the same.
