Momo For Thought

Authentic Sikkemese momo best served at Ama kitchen, Majnu ka tila.

Originated in Tibet, momo  has a strong presence in the fast food menus of Nepal and Sikkim. They are tasty dumplings made in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. These have, of late, become the latest fancy of Delhi residents. It has competed with samosas toe-to-toe for the title of most popular. From birthdays to cocktail parties, momo are now among the favorites of the Delhi middle class. After His Holiness the Dalai Lama escaped from Chinese communist rule in Tibet in 1959, Delhi became home to a handful of refugee enclaves like Monastery Market. Through restaurants and street food carts, the Tibetan refugees introduced the momo to India.

There's something that render Delhi quite incomplete without Momo, those tiny little dumplings stuffed with the most delicious fillings ever. The more you explore the capital the more you’ll know that there are signs and stalls devoted to the dumpling in every neighborhood. Everyone is addicted to Momo. And while doing our research on the best momo in town we explored the Tibetan market in delhi. Known for their Tibetan and northeastern food, we stopped by Ama’s restaurant at Majnu ka tila for juicy momo, with the best chilli sauce we’ve had in town!

As we arrived at the restaurant and were welcomed by the smiling staff. The place was very cozy and peaceful . Ama means mother, so the name suggests that the food here is like that of mother’s cooking. The restaurant serves authentic Chinese and Tibetan food to its customers. We ordered Steamed Veg and Chicken momos which came in with delicious chilli sauce and chilled fruit beer. As we took the first bite, the dumplings melted in the mouth and tasted a bit different what we eat at the streets. The essence of the dish was very authentic. The restaurant is a haven for Tibetan food lovers.Ram Gurung, who belongs to Sikkim serves hot delicious momo at Ama’s Café in majnu ka tila, delhi. “When I came to Delhi five years ago I started working as a security guard in a shopping mall. Then I got to know about this café where my cousin worked. Its been two years since then and I enjoy working here, doing what I love every single day.

People mostly order momos and thukpas. Jhol momos here are quite a rage”.

Having already gained quite popularity among food lovers, it completely lives up to its renown of serving scrumptious Thukpas, Momos and soft delicate Tingmos. The bill comes as a pleasant surprise at the end with their pocket-friendly rates. Smiles and more smiles all around.
