Brass, The Lustrous Gold

Uttar pradesh’s authentic brass handicraft found at A.J. kishore and company

Uttar Pradesh is a leading cluster of handicrafts not only in India but in whole world. Brass handicraft is considered to be most precious craft of the state. Brass, valued for its golden lustre, is sandcast and the various levels of production are handled by specialized craftsmen in mostly Moradabad as it is the hub of brass metal art ware craft. The dhaliyas, metal caste, casts the pieces, while the sheet metal workers and engravers have their own workshops. There are generally two kinds of engraving which is done, called Naqqashi or Sada kalam which is shallow and Khudai or Sia kalam which is deep. Khudai designs are intricate and chased depressions are filled in with coloured lac which is heated and then applied to metal. The design gleams in golden tracery against the translucent jewel-colored lac.  Naqqashi is sometimes done on a tinned surface.

Traditional vases, Ganeshas, laughing Buddha, stools, trays, contemporary beautiful bowls and many more articles are produced in brass. The entire process of production along with ornamentation usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. During Shah Jahan`s reign the brass ware of Moradabad was exported to different countries like Iran, Turkey and the Middle East. Along with Moradabad, Aligarh and Jalesar are two other important centers of brass work in Uttar Pradesh. Craftsmen in Aligarh are famous for brass locks, statuettes, ornamental door handles and fittings. Jalesar is known for cast bells made in brass.
